Guinean Dance class for Women
Sunday, 26 February 2012
1pm – 4pm
Venue: TBC
A two month course with Saskia Bakayoko from West African drum and dance company, Hamana, just returned from another amazing study trip to West Africa, looking at the beautiful art of Guinean ‘ballet style’ dance.
Saskia will teach four three hour classes over a two month period, concentrating heavily on style, technique, musical understanding and solo confidence. This is suitable for those with some experience of dance and will push everyone to achieve a solid understanding of the interpretation of the music and the essential elements of the style for women.
Concentrating on four main dances, doundounba, soli/mendiani, soko and manet, the course will explore the different elements of each dance, and how to recognise and understand the music.
The course is only open to invited participants and will be a closed session to allow us to really concentrate on building a body of work!!! We might even perform at the end if we have the courage! The course will run every other Sunday for two months, for three hours at a time, with music provided by the incredible Hamana musicians.
Places MUST be booked and paid for in advance – 4 x 3 hour sessions £60 in total (£15 per session).
